Toyota brought this about. Here is a link that discusses how it originated.

TPM could mean different things to different people. To me it means Technical Performance Measurements. These are specifically areas of functionality that a system must perform at in order to pass acceptance testing. They are identified prior to the build of a system and are generally part of an Integration and Test Plan or some sort of testing documentation. If the system cannot meet its TPMs then the team did not meet their goal. Back to the drawing board!!

Total Preventive Maintaince (TPM) I ran a TPM program for my company a few years ago. It is exactly what is says it is. Used correctly, it will schedule downtime for the maintaince dept. to service your equipment.

Start by reviewing each piece of equipemnt and record the scheduled maintaince, some daily, some weekly, some monthly..... and so on...

then put a schedule together looking at the number of maintaince people you have, assign each task to each man. (Remember, don't over load anyone, as they need to be free to fight fires every day.

if done correctly, your company will enjoy longer uptimes, scheduled repairs that can be budgeted for and production runs with better quality because you know the equipemnt is running up to par.

good luck
