If Google Went Down For A Day

05/11/2010 7:58 AM

hi everybody.

wat do u think what will happen if we wake up one day and google services are not working...n google says that the world cant avail it for few days or months or never...how will it change our world..

google started as a search engine and then as gmail..n then gchat n now google has 10 successful products from gmail to google health..

if u r a regular visitor to google labs..u will find google more intersting and more innovative day by day...with hundreds of google products in beta phase..

what do u think..will world communication and knowledge come to a stand still???

No, I've been around before google (even before the WEB was popular) and everything worked just fine.

yes u r correct that everything was fine..i m just 27 and using net since 2004 heavily like people drink water..i had a break off some days back and i went out of net for two months..but nothing happend..

but i must say that google has made a signifiant impact on knowledge quotient of people..if i dont know,i google it and find an answer..so easy..i feel the world will not be so easy and people again have to read many books and byheart them.

I was around before Google and life was fine. In fact we didn't have an internet when I was young.

If it went away forever it wouldn't be a great loss because many others do the same job. Maybe none have all of the same services all in the same place but if you look around you can still navigate as well.

A better question may be what if the internet as a whole just stopped? Those of you who have grown up with the internet being an integral part of your everyday life will suffer but we who were around for years before it will still know how to do research in books and make human contact with real people who we can see and shake hands with.

I even go on holiday and get away from CR4 with no few ill effects (I mean... the twitching subsides after a the first day or so)

But what happens when you come back again...and jump in the Bath?

"don't be evil" I've been using scroogle for years but it's just gone down

I will have to make use of google directly with all that entails or switch to another search engine. Google does lots you don't see.

I can describe the resulting calamity in 4 words:

"Babies nine months later".

We wouldn't have to read articles about the great green google at least! İt gets a bit sickening reading about how a company is sure to succeed - google invested in it. Would love to see the bottom line on all their off topic (core business) investments after 5 years - bet it would look horrible.

To the original poster's question... if all we lost was Google, yes there would be an immediate impact on those that use Google communication tools, such as G-mail, and had no back-up. Meaning, they kept all of their e-mail and address books on the google servers and somehow they were all lost.

In that regard, any individual or company that relies on a single service provider for critical applications, that does not have a back-up plan is asking for trouble regardless. Unless of course the service provider they are using provided the back-up plan, and redundancy as part of their service.

But, Not So Good asked a more important question. What if the internet as a whole went down?

Sure, many of us... to include me... were around pre-internet and were able to function without it. But, the communications infrastructure back then was established sans-internet. There was no such thing as e-commerce, e-mail, VoIP, websites, etc. But there is now and our communications infrastructure is no longer separate from the internet. So, if the internet went down today... even for those of us that use to know how to make phone calls and send faxes and shake hands, the impact would be sever.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the internet as a whole went down wouldn't all the phones and faxes stop working as well? I mean, very simply put, isn't the internet just wiring infrastructure and servers? In order for the whole thing to go down, either every nod on the net would need to be crippled by a virus or the infrastructure would need to fail catastrophically.

If either of those happened, wouldn't it knock out everything but radio and smoke signals?

I hardly ever use it, I use Live Search mostly. The only reason I see a google bar on my browser is because advertised it to me or some other download offered it as part of the package.

We would get along just fine with out it.

We'd never miss it. China doesn't have any use for it.
