Transformer Weld to Stop Leak

05/13/2010 9:38 AM

Is there special weld method to stop leak on the transformer? Do we have to drain the oil or can be done without draining the oil?

Thanks,

It depends on the type of leak and the oil spilled to the side you want to weld on. I should not weld on the top of the oil level, because the heat can ignite the oil and vapors and create a flame beam towards you.

Had this before, good I had my helmet closed and all my leathers on. No damage.

A mig welding unit will work best at low amperage.

If the oil is not hot, you can give it a try if the leak is not too big, like a crack. If it is rust, beware of making the hole bigger. In this case try a little patch plate to weld over the leak. Make the surface clean and start welding from top to bottom, after spot welding it in place.

Leave a small "fume escape" spot on top and deal with it last,

Do not heat up the place to much and cool it down all the time. Keep the weld heat very local.

It is safer to weld on a full tank than on a gas filled "not full tank". Stay away from the gaseous phase.
