Information about Wear Ring....

05/17/2010 2:03 PM

Hi Friends,

I m an Chemical engg & working in a Petrochemical Plant. In the plant we deal with viscous Quench Oil ( Cp is more than 50 at 170 deg C) & have polymerisation tendency. The pump used for pumping this Quench Oil is having Wear ring & we maintain some external Purge Oil( Lighter Oil) to this wear ring...Now my question is What is wear ring ? why we use flow to the wear ring?

We also maintain some purge oil flow to the mechanical seal of the pump...Why??

Pls reply in detail as i m new to tis kind of things...

Thanks...

Basically Flow of Purge oil to the Wear rings and Mechanical Seals is to lubricate them to minimize wear and burn out of mechanical seals. you can check these links for detail http://www.engineersedge.com/pumps/wearing_rings.htm http://www.engineersedge.com/pumps/mechanical_seal.htm
