Hello,

I interpret your query as follows, please correct me if I am wrong. You are an injection mold designer in China and you want to set up a joint business with an offshore person. This person can feed you work and you can do it.

To be successful you must offer more than just mold design, offer mold manufacture with the design work and if you can, mold flow analysis. Learn product design.

Most offshore companies can design their own tools but prefer to pay for Chinese labor to do this as the design is only the tip of the iceberg in their plastic product manufacture, you have to have more to offer. Think of this.

Mold design is ~ 40-60 hrs tops for fairly complex contoured parting-line molds.e.g. Automotive molds in the 7-10,000lb range. Cost $2,500-$3,500 (not a profit center)

Add the cost of Material at ~5- 10% of total cost.

Mold Flow analysis: $1,500-$2,000 (Is a profit center) depending on complexity

Labor to machine the mold can be 400-1400 hours. (very risky, low profit center). This is where the labor cost savings are for getting molds built in China. As a business it is so risky to put all that labor into something and you have nothing if it does not work perfectly--- this you don't find out until you are 100% finished and you have already paid you laborers and material charges. You will not get your finish payment until you produce the parts per print-- but you will get a lawsuit. It is a miserable business, although rewarding in the form of thank-yous and personal satisfaction from having created something cool.

A business in China that provides Mold design (not a real profit center), Mold Flow analysis (good profit center) and Project Management (good profit center) to oversee building and testing of the completed mold at a minimum, is a viable business. Adding molding ( fair profit center) and assembly (good profit center) is a more well rounded business. You are up against some pretty awesome competition to try to just offer mold design.

Get together with a few of your colleagues who have expertise in each area of the complete business. View websites of Chinese Manufacturers that offer similar services and you will understand the competition.

You need a technical sales engineer with really good english and possibly other languages to establish a trusting relationship with the offshore customer. He/she must be an expert at customs and shipping. You need a Mold Designer who can estimate mold costs also. You need a Project engineer to follow the design and the mold building and mold try outs. He should be a reasonably good processor to help the mold try-out shop to succeed quickly with a trial and he must be able to trouble shoot the mold for problems and relay fixes back to the moldmaker. You need an accountant to take care of all the money you can make if you approach the venture correctly.

Moldmaking has lousy risk to reward statistics. Mold design is a little better but you are only as good as your last design. It is a tough life. Try product design as you will be able to see how the product has to be molded as you design it. This makes for a higher thinking process and the risk to reward benefits are far superior. Gain a good reputation and you will thrive.

Good luck

due to Labor to machine the mold can be 400-1400 hours. (very risky, low profit center).I hope it done not in china.

I hope set up a office in china, and supply mold design and mold flow firstly, If the office successfully.I will machine the mold.
