Switching Substation Question

05/24/2010 3:14 AM

We want to transmit 6MW power at 11KV level to the distance of 8.5-9 Kilometer through underground cables. Our power transmission network owner is asking to install a switching substation at the fence of our plant instead of directly connecting the cable to our 11KV/3.3KV transformer. Considering the ambient temperature of 60C, what is your advice and what should be type and size of the cables. Considering two feeders will carry normally 3MW load each and 6MW at the time of maintenance on one feeder, is it advisable to have 33KV transmission or 11KV transmission will be good enough with voltage drop and cable temperature rise in permissible limits. I will appreciate your quick answer.

Regards,

Amit

Dear Alan,

We have in total 4 transformers, two of 11/3.3KV, 6MVA and two of 3.3/0.415KV ( 3.75MVA). The maximum power consumption will be 6MVA. And we will be drawing power through two feeders.

regards,

Amit

You say two feeder. is it ring loop seperate two feeders? I mean Feeder 1 has 2 cables from different breakers from the upstream substation. or do you mean two cables connected from different breakers and make a ring loop circuit?...Give this information for for actual calculation

As per your information, max. load a cable has to be handled is 6MVA and corresponding current is 315A approx. So you have to use 3 core 300 sq. mm aluminium cable.

11KV will be better for your transmission as voltage drop will be less in this level as compared to 3.3KV level.

Thanks,

Will it be okay with 11KV or 33KV transmission will do better incase only one feeder supply all load.
