Lineseed Oil as a Pipe Coating for Oil Heating

05/28/2010 6:17 AM

hi all there.

i wanna know if lineseed oil can be used for pipe coating for oil heating where the pipe is submerged in the oil. refering to wikipedia, it states"Linseed oil can polymerize and the reaction is exothermic, and rags soaked in it can ignite spontaneously". any help will be grateful.

varunpassi, are you doing something like this?

This is an electric oil filled space heater. If yes, I would suggest you consider Refined Mineral Oil instead of linseed oil.

If no... Please help me out, not sure what you are looking for.

What is the pipe made from????????????? Is this something that we should know?

No. Why? And would you coat both sides of the pipe? Is the heat transfer fluid the same? inside and out?

Are you using water on one side? I don't understand..

But, I live in the desert most of the time and don't use heat.

Polymerization is usually exothermic, but not always. It is only a hazard if the mass of the reactive substance is so large that the reaction "runs away". The material surrounding the initial reaction site insulates it and the heat can't escape, so it burns. A big bunch of rags soaked in linseed oil is a good example. This is rare!!!

I would not use linseed oil. But I really don't have enough information for an informed opinion.

Linseed oil is a drying oil and cross-links with the oxygen in the air. This can be accelerated with small amounts of cobalt or manganese catalysts. Once it has polymerized and become cross-linked, the reaction is done. It won't cross-link any more. However, it may be sensitive to oil and may soften and swell. I would recommend an epoxy paint for contact with oil. MIght be good to put on a primer before the epoxy.

hi there this is the image of the tank. the steam is used to maintain the fuel oil temp in tank. we had recommended epoxy coating for the steam/ condensate pipes since they r immersed in the fuel oil tank. but the vendor says he'll give coatin of linseed. now plz suggest if that is acceptable or not.

If the vendor is recommending a linseed coating, get him to prepare a metal coupon of the same metal as the pipes coated with his linseed oil, put it in a sealed jar of fuel oil, and do an aging study at elevated temperature. Age at least 2 weeks at 100C or hotter. If the coating is going to soften or be attacked, this should show any weakness. Might as well do a coupon of epoxy coating also for comparison.
