Paper Or Plastic

05/28/2010 11:49 PM

Here in the states you hear this any time you go shopping.

My question is, when you choose plastic, what kind of plastic is that stuff.

It's incredibly thin, yet incredibly strong.

it hardly stretches even when loaded with like 20 pounds of groceries. and try to actually rip it and it's nearly impossible. so what kind of plastic is this incredible stuff?

Most are #2 recycle which is HDPE (high density polyethylene).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyethylene

Different versions of Polyethylene have some pretty amazing properties. This is my favorite

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_high_molecular_weight_polyethylene#Trade_names

as it makes an awesome fishing line!

For me, plastic used in US for grocery products is working. Besides reusing the plastic bags for different tasks (including small amounts of garbage), I have noticed that they decay in time. I mean they loose their strength, and I think that they are biodegradable. Now, that's the stuff (sorry, an add with the green, British accent talking gecko )

The bags that you notice decaying are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun that causes the plastic links to break. Plastic that is buried will last hundreds of years.

HDPE (plastic) bags are not biodegradable.

But I'm still looking for exact names of this particular types.

I have worked with PE and PP in may formulations. But this stuff that is somewhat crinkly sounding, extremely thin. yet incredibly tough is what I'm after, what it is and who actually makes it.

I don't wish to be rude, but the answer was already provided along with links for a wealth of information.

Sorry I asked,

Yes I can search and find thousands of bags to buy. But the question was what material is these bags made of. Not a generic "Plastic" or a "PE", there are thousands if not millions of different plastics out there.

And I was hopeing that someone would know for some reason what exactly this one type was. There are several types of these shopping bags, but the ones that seemed the strongest and yet was also the lightest is a family where the plastic actually sounds somewhat brittle when you move it. Where most "PE" plastics have a soft sound to them.

I'm sorry for trying to learn something for the children.

Interesting video on amateur atmospheric research. It's good that they are trying to involve and educate the local children. Can you explain how the latex balloon relates to your original question about High Density Polyethylene shopping bags?

Polyethylene variants are well known to anyone with plastics experience. PE has been around for a long time, although some of the Ultra High Molecular Weight versions and manufacturing processes are more recent developments. The wiki links in post #2 provide good basic information and any interested children shouldn't have any problem web searching more details from there.

There will be many suppliers and manufacturers all over the world. As for an EXACT recipe or manufacturing process, good luck trying to identify a proprietary additive (if there is one) or a proprietary process from any current material supplier or manufacturer.

Instead of the latex balloon, use a PE envelope.

Yes there are PE envelope balloon manufacturers. And we even have one that we will be using. It has a volume of 300,000 cubic feet. But they are also very expensive balloons too.

We tried once and it was with just a plain trash bag manufacturer we had then give us a stub roll that was not cut and sealed so in other words it was a long tube.

It worked pretty good even tho it was a heavy mil plastic.

So after shopping the other day and playng with that shopping bag it got me to thinking about this again. but with this thin yet incredibly tough plastic bags.

If we could find someone again that could supply us with a as large as possible tube again to experiment with.

Search for blown film manufacturers or extruders in your area. They might run a few extra feet for you if it's a worthy cause.

I re-read the OP and, I noticed that I didn't pay attention to much to the content, in fact I gave a s.t.u.p.i.d. answer. And I haven't had a beer for ages...

I do not commonly see this material in shopping bags, but it sounds like PET (Mylar).

Close, But a tad bit too far away from the PE properties.

Thats a little too crispy.

The shopping bag stuff has some give , it does stretch a small amount then it seems like it hits a brick wall. funny stuff.

Thanks all for the help so far.

It grows on bushes in the southwest, particularly around Juarez, Mexico.

One day I was driving to our factory there and was faced with a tumbleweed the size of a school bus all covered with plastic grocery bags headed directly at me in my lane during one of their spring sandstorms.

They are not much for litter control in Juarez so you could likely get all you want for the taking. And they crinkle.

Just keep your head down.
