Leaking Tx oil.

05/29/2010 1:08 AM

What would be the possible causes/reasons of oil leaking through the tap changer in a current tx. The oil leaking rate is 40 sec/drop.

Please give more information: Transformer MVA, voltages, age, typical loading and temperature, how often the tap changer operates and how many operations on the counter, etc.? Where is the oil leaking? - the typical location is at the tap changer covers, and is due to deterioration of the rubber gaskets over time. The vibration from the mechanical operation of the tap changer, as well as variation in operating temperature and pressure of the transformer can affect this.

The usual repair is to deenergize the transformer, drain the oil from the tap changer, and replace the gaskets with new nitrile rubber. It might be a good time to do an internal inspection of the tap changer, and replace the contacts if needed at the same time.

Thanks a million Peter T for your contribution. The following is the information you requested concerning the Leaking Tx.

-The Tx is 1600 kva

-Its a step down-11000v/400v

-It was installed decenber 2009 and it has been in operation since then.

-The typical load is about 400kva-800kva

-Temp. 65'c

-There are 5 operations on the counter and the setting of the tx is no. 5

NB: At the time of installation, we first noted the tx leaking from the top plate and this was reported and a techician was sent from the supplier and welded the top cover to perfection in February 2010. Then three months down the line we again noticed the leak and this time through the tap changer.
