Compliments of How Stuff Works:

It could be that either the linkage or the collar have failed. If the reverse gear moves on it's shaft and engages while the transmission is in a forward gear you will hear the grinding noise that you seem to expect.

Is this guy still in the driveway?

Could be a differential related problem, or that the shift knob has moved so that the shift pattern on the knob is incorrect?

Yes, from the information in the title I know that it's a Ford heavy duty 1 ton pickup with dual rear tires and a 5 speed tranny that no longer engages reverse.

If you start deleting my posts because they're irrelevant you'll be deleting most of them.

Thanks.

I figure I'll take my chances and try to help this poor soul. There is a gear that must engage the reverse idler in order to obtain reverse. With the limited amount of information we have to work with it sounds like a shifting fork isn't doing its job. Do all of the other gears work ok? I believe the low(1st) and reverse shifting fork move the same gear. The tip of the shift stick slides into whichever of three pockets 1st-rev, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th. if it feels like it is working in low but not reverse or vise versa the locking bolt on the shift rail that locks the fork to the rail may have come loose or out of position.

Sometimes all that's required is to remove the floorboard and take out the bolts that hold the shift tower to the trans. Just looking in there may show the problem. I believe 1st & reverse are obtained by moving the shift stick to the left. That means the shift rail under the shift tower on the extreme right is the rail and fork in question. Its not a difficult job to do ,but you may not feel like trying it. Most important......do not allow any dirt to enter the trans. If you are still awake I'll close now.

Please let us know if we were any help since you're still laughing from the other great replies.

It is a Ford what did you expect it to act like someone designed it who cared if it would last and work when you needed it too ?

They need you to bring it in to the shop more often it is designed to fail and need repair .

Think about it oxygen sensors on a heavey duty truck ? for what reason they use a ton of fuel so adding junk only makes them use more , see they are desinged to cost you more all the way around.
