Power Carrying Capability of a Transmission Line

06/01/2010 8:35 AM

How much power does a transmission line can carry? e.g a 220kv/132kv line can carry power up to ....MW? Are there any specifications regarding power carrying capability?

Oh..My God.,,,,,,what is that 220kv/132kv line? I can tell you how much weight can carry on lines if you tell me the type of conductor.

Power carrying capacity of a transmission line at a particular voltage is largely dependent on 1) the diameter of the line, 2) the material of the conductor and 3) the length of the line. Several other factors come into play but those are the most significant.

I will advice you to study Jacobi's law (maximum power transfer theorem). I won't state the law since it may as well be a homework but note

a) This is used extensively in many devices including communication devices.

b) This is the maximum power transfer condition but isn't the maximum efficient condition (System efficiency is only 50%).

c) it avoids standing waves.

The maximum power carrying capacity of transmission line is depend on the voltage and type of conductor (current carrying capacity of conductor).

for example, a 220kv transmission line using rail conductor have maximum capacity of appx.870 amp.assume the power factor 0.9 than the maximum power is.298 MW.
