Power Quality of Renewable Energy Discussion

06/03/2010 9:35 PM

Dear all, I try to find idea related the power quality problem that happened in sustainable energy or renewable energy like wind power, solar cell, ocean energy, etc. The topic, I think, will be a good topic for discussion for me and my friend here (because we often discuss it).

The problem is harvesting your energy.

That is a first quality problem

- when you do not harvest and store - you will only have solar power when the sun shines, wind power when the wind blows e.g.

When you store everything in batteries, the quality of your power will depend on the quality of your inverters and the quantity of energy stored.

Directly related to the quality of equipment used. In the installs I do I use Outback inverters and they supply true sine wave at +/-2% rated output which is better than the local utility at +/- 8%.

People are talking of storage etc etc- which is a longterm issue. I was involved in solar photovoltaic panel manufacturing long back. I had connected an oscilloscope to the output of the panel to see how steady is the output of the panel under Bangalore's clear sunlight day. It just was horrible to see continuous fluctuation in output voltage- which could be seen on the oscilloscope. The supply of mains power from the grid is far steadier. So do note fluctuations take place in output current in millisecond level. Suppose solar panel is say under a tree shade partially. There can be passing clouds too which result in regular / continuous fluctuations. Even a small wind which shakes the branch/ leaves can show up as voltage / current fluctuations. I am suer same thing happens with wind energy also. So this is what we call quality of power out put is poor and switched mode electronic circuits are needed to stabilise it efficiently.

So storage of energy using battery is a far long term phenomena.

A low-pass filter could easily smooth the short-term fluctuations in solar panel output, but the effects of clouds curtailing the output voltage would be more difficult to filter out. A good storage battery system serves nicely as an "equalizer" for such fluctuations. With a properly designed load, these fluctuations need not be all that problematic. Just don't try to run a clock with solar power directly.

Wind is another issue all together- even the steadiest of breezes is going to fluctuate. One would suspect that the momentum of the rotating parts would dampen some of the smaller fluctuations, but not the larger ones. Again, some sort of storage system could dampen the fluctuations significantly.

So is there any options for saving your energy when you can't use the Solar panel.
