16 MERV House Air Filters

06/06/2010 9:01 AM

Last year I had a Lennox high seer solar assisted heat pump and air handler installed after the existing standard unit failed. The installer wasn't too familiar with the unit and couldn't give much guidance as to filter life.

The problem is the unit uses a 25"X20"X5" filter in the air handler, these are not available from the usual sources, Home Depot, Lowe's etc. They also specify a 16 MERV rated filter. I can find all sorts of the filters on the internet and some investigation shows the MERV rating is relative to filtration ability and the 13 to 16 range is intended for atmospheres like hospitals. A 16 MERV filter retails in the range of $100 to $110 USD. The part I am having problems with is I can't find the recommended life of the filter.

If it is the usual 3 months, that is a pretty healthy increase to my monthly heating costs. It would easily wipe out any savings that I expected to see, and haven't as an aside.

The course of action that I decided on was to utilize a 12 MERV filter on a three month change out which sets me back $104 annually.

Anyone have any suggestions?

MERV sounds like a complicated way to talk about filter efficiency as it relates to particle size. Must have been invented by a marketeer.

The higher the MERV the smaller particle it will catch.

You'll have to decide if you want to filter smoke particles and other tiny stuff out of your air. The change frequency will increase with the MERV number AND the amount of particles you generate while going about your daily routine.

So, I might need to change the filter once a month because I have a dog.

Most commercial filters are changed when they become clogged enough to restrict air flow beyond some point.

Buy 5 cheap 1" filters, stack them and tape the edges together if you really want to save money.

You'll have to determine the service interval.

Part of that stack could also be electrostatic filters which have a metal media. They can be washed out and reused.

Also on my list a MERV rating of 16 is as high as it goes .3 to 1 microns. Unless you have someone sick that needs the air to be filter to that extent at it is a bit of an over kill. The only other reason I can think of for that filter rating is a lengthy warranty on the HVAC. To keep any contamination from build up inside which may cause failure. Also it's easy way for the manufacurer to get out of the warranty. Cost of the filter being as much as it is many people would change to a lower MERV rated filter.

I had thought about either making up either a 1" spacer piece since 4" filters are readily available or a 4" spacer piece in the interest of frugality. I see no shame in not wasting money.

The average HVAC filter service interval for residential setting is dependant on the level of hygiene of the occupants. Household dust is mostly dander so bathe often and extend filter life

Unless you have a pack of pets or live in a dust bowl that filter is good for about one year, due to the over all surface area. You can cheap out and stack several thiner filters together, but you probably be reducing your return air flow.

You might want to locate a filter manufacturer and purchase a box of exact replacements. Your unit cost will be less, but there is a bigger up front hit. The good news is that you are set for several years.
