Phased Array Inspection

06/09/2010 12:56 AM

Hello All,

Has anyone any experience of using phased Array Ultrasonic Testing on Aluminium welds in 5.5mm thick extrusions (6061)?

I have tried with conventional UT with different probes with no luck.

X Ray works fine apart from the fact it slows down our production cycle.

Thanks in advance

David

I do not have any experience of Phased Array on Aluminium welds but just to share with you a safer radiography technique which would surely ease out your production cycle. Its close proximity radiography technique with Gamma Block shielding offered by some selected companies. May be you already know about this.

We used Phased-Array on some products, but all ferrous.

Depending on the problems you are having with conventional UT, you may incur the same problems with phased-array, as the principles are the same.

The only difference between the two is additional probes that are pulsed as different intervals to create a wider slice through the object.

The above image was taken from Wikipedia.

Based on this representation, depending on probe positioning and timing of pulses, you can inspect a much wider area simultaneously.

But, if your issue with UT in general is not getting a clean signal, or too much noise, or an inconsistent water film, then your solution lies in other areas.

When we first ventured into UT, we made the mistake of purchasing probes that had a water column. Switching to probes that used only a water film significantly increased the reliability of the system.

Hi Java Head, I think you might be right, the other factor could be I dont think that they have the correct probe to do this type of inspection. Thanks for the Info PS we have a house in Java!

I'm working (designing) medical ultrasonic diagnostic systems and work since more than 20 year with medical X-RAY.

Mi first concern to Al inspection is the field of view requirement and the second, think you use echo or transmission inspection techniques ?

Hi Walter,

we are using Shear Wave echo and we just want to view the weld and HAZ.

Thanks Walter

I am not very experienced with phased array inspection, I still use the shear wave UT but lately I use the lower radiation digital x-ray. I love to get the film on cd with the zoom features and other tools in the program but it is the saved cost of not having the crews of welders and fitters standing around while conventional x-ray is going on that really makes digital better for most weld inspections. I was amazed to hear that a welder can continue to weld as long as he/she is not directly in front of the machine when they are shooting a weld.

Now thats an eye opener! X ray without cancelling our night shift would make a big difference to our production schedule. I just hope its available in KL, Thanks Pipewelder
