2000 Chevy Cavalier Won't Start

06/09/2010 1:38 PM

Hi, i'm a mother of three and I have this car that wont start. There have been many people that have said that it could be my fuel pump and others have said that it could be my ignition. I don't know the first thing about cars.

Hello, felling the blues (feeling, maybe?). Sorry to hear your troubles.

A quick check reveals yours to be thread #59 regarding this generation of Cavalier... since March of 2009. You do not seem to be alone.

This link will reveal the previous discussions regarding the "My Cavalier will not start/run/stop blowing horn/go into gear" troubles we have already discussed. You may find something there (there are 500 posts to go through).

I do not wish to seem like I am blowing you off, but you really have not given us much to diagnose your troubles. Can you tell us ANYTHING else?

I'm sorry. Okay, The car hums in the rear when I turn the key on.Ether was sprayed in the in-take valve while trying to start the car. The ignition module was replaced yesterday and today we are going to replace the crank sensor.

What has changed since the last time it ran correctly?

An engine needs fuel, spark, air, and compression. And the sparks must happen at the correct time. It also needs to have an escape path for the exhaust to go to.

The easiest thing to check for is spark. Pull a spark plug wire off of one of the spark plugs, and have some one check for spark while you try to start the car.

No offense meant here... but... if you don't know the first thing about cars, then how do you intend to fix it, even if you get good information from this forum? If you do not intend on fixing it yourself, why not just skip asking a question here and have the mechanic analyze it?

For future reference and something that I think every member of CR4 now knows from reading forum threads is: Don't Buy Chevy Cavaliers.

Maybe we can help you and maybe we can't.

Lets start here;

Just what does the car do when you attempt to start it, Nothing, Just clicks, Attempts to start. As stated previously we need more information. I don't know if it's safe to say from what, "many people have said" ,your vehicle attempts to run , but will not run.

Help us out!

well looking at all the posts on here and other sites, it looks like the cavalier is the lest reliable car ever made in automotive history.

apart from slight hiccup with toyota

and possibly the cars made (sorry thrown together ) by Rover uk which has now gone (i wonder why)

This is an engineering site, with an automotive section. My count is 59 threads in the last year regarding Cavalier; none praising the car, all troubles. Are the automotive chat sites swamped with questions and complaints about this car as well? How come GMC isn't taking heat like Toyota? At least the car doesn't run away.

Another way of looking at this might be that an awful lot of engineers bought these cars, and we see lot of the same problems because there are so many of them in engineers hands.

And besides, after your Toyota gas pedal sticks to the floor and you crash at 80 mph, what are the chances you are going to write here and ask how to fix it?

A year model 2000 is likely high mileage. It may be more expensive than it is worth to fix it. We had a Mitsubichi Galant that just went south with high mileage and we had to let it go. It just kept eating expensive parts. Everything was wrong with it., Fuel, Ignition, and other internal engine parts as well as chasis parts. Consider a later model used car that was well maintained. I would check out 3 to 5 year old cars. Hope this helps.
