I guess a zigzag winding is a bad winding. You might be interested in a zigzag transformer. Wiki has some on it: copy and paste in your browser please.

To provide a low impedance circulating path for Zero sequence currents.

Zigzag winding is used in grounding (or Earthing) transformer. See the previous thread http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/36828

Not necessarily! Have you not heard of Power Transformers with Vector Group Dz & Yz? Wherever there is a need for a low impedance path for zero sequence currents, one can go for a Zig-Zag winding. I have commissioned a number of Dz0 Vector Group Power Transformers of 2 MVA, 11kV/433V Rating.

*********

I have a serious problem with the comments about this OT.

I have wound many different transformer coils and there is IMHO only one good way to wind it: TO PUT THE WINDINGS CLOSE AND PARALLEL NEXT TO EACH OTHER, so that the shellack insulation gets stressed evenly.

A zigzag winding between it is about a shortcut time bomb.

Unless someone explains clearly that what I do is wrong, these answers do not correspond to a safe reality.

********* If you are talking about ZIG ZAG configurations

****** I don't read it that way in the OT ***** of the coils in a transformator, that is a different story. Correct me if I 'm wrong. Respectfully
