Electric Winch

06/12/2010 8:39 PM

Using an electric endlees winch with a 10,000 lb.capacity, my question here is how long can I run the winch pulling 1,000lbs continuosly? The winch would be placed under the top gear and will be pulling down.

you will have to inspect the duty cycle of the winch motor, the type of motor, and the general capability of the winch and it's lubrication system.

Some of these small winches will run electrically for a an indefinite time at 10% of their rated load. That means the coild will not fry.

BUT, if it is a brush type series motor, it is not capable of long term operation. An industrial induction motor, with good bearings, can run at 10% load for years, with lube inspections every month or so. The reduction gear train....is it up to industrial spec, does it run in oil? or is it a consumer bumper mounted thing made in china.

The chain/cable. The way you speak, this cable will be a loop that will go round a spindle. This is in effect bending a piece of metal back and forth...in time it will break, steel strand by steel strand until it breaks and baby falls, cradle and all.

So it will need a weekly inspection and should be a stainless steel cable.

Well, I am in Toronto, Canada. I would suggest you speak with an industrial winch supplier, to see what is his closest match to your job. Bear in mind that it may cost quite a bit. Cheap $200 winches will probably fail in a week in your 100% duty cycle.

I suggest you tell us what you are doing this for. Then we can apply some experience to the task, and we may well find a cheaper/better way.
