What is a Pilot Wire?

Hi, can any body tell me why is a pilot wire called a pilot wire?

It is used in protection along with CT. The wire connected to a current transformer is called a pilot wire?

I can give you plenty of details or documents about the pilot wire or where it is used. First of all , please tell me how did you come to know about this?...

Perhaps this GE application note (pdf file) will be helpful. GE also offers on their website a 15-chapter 377-page book that you can download about the subject, The Art & Science of Protective Relaying by (2.8M pdf file). Chapters 5 and 15 discuss pilot-wire relays. On page 77 they say, "The term 'pilot' means that between the ends of the transmission line there is an interconnecting channel of some sort over which information can be conveyed." Somehow that doesn't tell us much about how the specific term "pilot" came into use for the interconnecting wire that allows long-distance use of differential protection in a classic Merz-Price voltage balance system.

As in a airplane or boat, by using it's information gathered, it monitors and guides the process.
