Mathematics and the Stradivarius

07/15/2005 9:30 AM

Regardless of what the article title says, Swedish scientists have not yet dispelled the acoustic mystery surrounding the stradivarius violin, that perfectly designed and sounding string instrument. Scientists at Mid Sweden University are using computer assistance to calculate, through an "advanced mathematical optimization method", the specs to re-create and design the shape of the top section of a Strad. Anyone who saw the movie The Red Violin will appreciate the interest in this acoustic mystery and the technology at work to unravel it.

Once in a while it's nice to know that there are somethings created with such care an knowledge that science can not yet unravel it's mysteries.
