Transformer Tank

06/17/2010 7:34 AM

Is the selection of transformer tank like tank with radiator banks or corrugated tank, goverened by any standards or it depends on the designer. Are there any standards which provide the guide line for the selection of "type of tank"

thanks in advance

Vinod

Dear Mr.Vinod,

The tank selection depends upon the effective area required to

dissipate the heat produced. The factors to be considered are short time loading ,

average loading , the ambient temperature of the location , the insulating oil

characterestic, the paint applied for the tank and its heat dissipating factor,

the wind characterestic in that area.the space available to locate the transformer.

Furthur we have to decide for Oil - naturally cooled , fan cooled,or any other

special coolin methods are required. Refer to MG.Say's book- The Design and

performance of AC machines.

There no fixed tank sizes and has to be chosen for each case.

No stipulation by any standard

It is controlled mostly by:

  1. Specification requirement (type of cooling etc)
  2. Loss to be dissipated
  3. Oil cooled/ air cooled
  4. Cooling medium (air/ water etc)
  5. If not specified by (1) the Designer can go with his technology.

Dear Mr. Vinod,

Please Check IS 2026 (Part-1) for Specification,

IS 335-1993 for New insulating oil specification,

IS-6600-1972 for guide for loading of oil immersed transformer.

Have a look at

SANS 780:2004

Distribution transformers

Specifies requirements for single-phase and three-phase distribution transformers of the oil-immersed type.

Yes!

SANS IEC 780 covers both.

Mr. Manurop saying right and tank design depons on the customer specification. If any customer specified Radiators type or corrigation type, u follow the same. if not you can choose best optimum selection as per electrical design, temp. gradient etc
