Rotation Reversal

06/26/2010 10:22 AM

my workers sometimes run into this problem on psc motors. they call me and it either corrects by restarting or replacing the motor. the problem is i can't explain to them what causes this problem or if anything can be done to prevent a reccurence. i am an industrial and commercial hvac service contractor. we work on all type and size motors and install and maintain pneumatic, ddc and electro mechanical controls. with my age and backgound i should know the answer but the fact is i don't. i too proud to call my cousin that left school in the 6th grade for the answer because he'll laugh at me.

Since you have not given the application of the motor that the problem occur in it would be difficult to pin point the exact cause. I do know in some cases that if the motor is all ready rotating backwards due to some outside force. When power is applied if will continue to rotate in that direction. In a capacitor start motor the winding that start it through the capacitor are small. They exert very little force on the motor and set the rotation. Wind blowing though the blades of a fan to cause it to rotate opposite the desired direction may continue in that direction after the power applied.
