Earthing Conductor Protection

06/29/2010 6:13 AM

Is it possible that dry sandy soil can affect the rate of cathodic rxn of underground bare earthing conductor in the soil?If it true what can be done to protect the underground earth cable.

NB

please can anyone help me with the "BS 6651 for lightning protection"?

For the cathodic reaction the pre-requisites are Electrolyte (liquid + sub soil chemicals) and presence of non-inert gases (oxygen).

When you declare that the straita is dry you shoud not be concerned with cathodic rxn.

What is your specific query w.r.t. BS 6651?

I'll be handling the lightninng protection of the water treatment shelter and other buildings; the design clearly states that the design was done based on BS 6651.I want to see if they are specifics i have to take note of while implementing the job.

Question: In corrosion protection why do you make the underground stranded conductor the cathode and not the anode?

I am not quite getting you;

I would say that you certainly don't need BS 6651 handy to impliment the job.

Any designer would have referred to it, for example to acess thunder storm days, lightning flashes per km sq. per year, formulas relating to collection area, probable numbers of grounding spikes, Weighting factors on various accounts etc.

Best advise here to you is that you take note of conformities of actual work done with the Design and specifications.

Corrosion potection can be by a coating for example PVC sheathing of conductor so what you are really at?

Cathodic protectection doesn't relates to stranded conductor it can be related to solid burried conductor or some burried steel pipe or structure.

In an electrolyte the movement of electrons (anions cations) determines the terminology anode cathode to be used as appropriate.

this problem can be tackled by using LEAD SHEATHED COPPER CONDUCTOR
