07/05/2010 10:16 PM

Sir,

I want to know, can I use 2NOS of 5AMP Fuse parallel instead of one 10AMP Fuse?

They won't fit in the fuse holder.

It is not suggested and even not permitted by any of the code that I aware of.

No, It will not be good to use the fuses in parallel since these will not fit in the fuse holder and also 10A surge will lead both the fuses to cause damage to the circuitry.

Yes, if done properly.

This ignores the above comments and common sense. But, who cares?

Here is the quote from the NEC regarding the use of fuses in parallel:

"240.8 Fuses or Circuit Breakers in Parallel. Fuses and circuit breakers shall be permitted to be connected in parallel where they are factory assembled in parallel and listed as a unit. Individual fuses, circuit breakers, or combinations thereof shall not otherwise be connected in parallel."

I assumed, the OP asked the question in general.

OK, How about this:

Yes, but it won't be in compliance with any applicable codes.

I think there would be pros and cons to this issue:.. it maybe yes to have a more economical than buying a single one...

but it maybe NO in the protection coordination viewpoint.

Then again there is the safety viewpoint, whereby in the event only one fuse opens and is removed from the circuit(say for instance, with an insulated fuse puller), there could be the dangerous assumption that the circuit is isolated from the energy source.

It is the result of these dangerous assumptions that, although should not happen, do in fact happen.

I base this on the various posts, where a lack of awareness for danger or basic concept is evident, such as "meggering a 11KV cable with a 500v megger."
