Corrosion Pipe A106B Material

07/06/2010 4:11 AM

Hi All,

I am mechanical engineer. I just received a question about corrosion but I don't know much in this field. Could anyone know please help? Or instruct the basic as I understood that corrosion is depend on many factors

The question is " Which pH value that pipe material A106B can allow?

Thanks

pH by itself is not a good indicator of corrosion, for example:

93% sulfuric acid, with a pH of less than 1, is quite suitable with mild carbon steel (A106B with low velocities as piping)

50% sodium hydroxide, with a pH of 13.7 is also quite suitable for A106B piping, provided temperatures are low.

You need to know the exact constituents, and temperature range, of the liquids for a suitable answer.

If you want a complete, authoritative reference you should look into obtaining a book (series of volumes) such as:

Do you know of a cheaper alternative? I don't mind buying books for myself but that's a little expensive for me right now.

To determine corrosion one needs to know:--

What is the product flowing thru the line

What is the rate of flow?

What is the temp of the product?

What is the line pressure at all times ?

What is the line surrounded by externaly Earth, air, water, seawater, chemicals, ?

What about the static charge when product flows, the product halts etc

Whats the cathodic protection needed ? voltage and the type to be specified.

These are some of the factors that determine internal and external corrosion of material pipe assuming it is MS mild steel. For others the specs will change again.

Best Regards,
