Dear Baktash:

Your friends and neighbors desperately need the commoditites of every day living that most of the rest of the world already enjoys: Safe drinking water, uninterrupted power, safe highways, and removal of human wastes from urban centers to prevent ravages of disease. These are the true accomplishments of western civilisation's engineers over Nature.

While the rarefied scholarly approach of optics might seem to you to be a worthy future Aghanistan commercial market, I would urge you to put your talent and energy to work bringing todays humans the necessities of life so that they can live safer and more productive lives.

Perhaps by the time your work is done, your daughters, grandaughters, sons or grandsons will be researchers in optics. But I'm thinking that developing electrical power, sewers, and cell phone services is an immediate and human worthy effort where you are.

But there is nothing quite like reliable utilitites to allow one to think clearly about topics other than survival issues.

Milo
