Level Indicators

07/10/2010 7:07 PM

Hi All,

I need to design a level indicator for 4 silos I am currently building.

The silos once finished will contain HDPE in granules.

Height of the silo is 21 feet and diameter is approx 9 feet.

I need to measure three levels. "FULL", RE-FILL", and "EMPTY"

I have been searching the different manufacturers and obviously every and each one makes the best system. It looks to me as if a capacitive system might be my best bet, but as this is the first time I am doing this I want some reassurance or critics.

What say you?

Wangito

Hi

Bin there sin it... it is exactly what I said. want to hear from some one who actually has the experience. Not a propaganda. Just don't want, and haven't got the time to experiment.

Wangito.

lynlynch has recommended one of the best level sensors made for your application(HDPE Granules).

I have seen Bindicators give years of trouble-free operation, in the most severe conditions.

Thanks. It may be hard to find someone here who has first hand knowledge of the various types of dry material sensors.

I'm a wet process type, anyway.

Cheers.

Yep... I couldn't find anyone here in this country that has trustworthy information, and first hand experience as a user. Salesmen knowledge here is nearly -273°C...

You are correct, for dry material, my only experience is with bindicators. It will be hard to find someone that can make the OP's choice for him.

Sorry to waste your valuable time. I won't do it ever again, trust me. Find your own damn level indicator, if you can.

??????

I meant no offence. If I did offend you I sincerely apologise.

All I wanted is to hear from people who actually used it in the field. and you certainly didn't waste any of my time.

But again, if I did offend you, I am sorry.

Any piece of equipment can be misapplied or miscalibrated. Capacitance probes work well but can be affected by buildup or changes in properties if you switch materials.

For measuring an easy material like your HDPE granules I would recommend the Roto-Bin-Dicator model. It is pretty foolproof to install and requires virtually no calibration. The material handling OEM's use them because they will function with widely different materials.

I've used these style Bindicators:

but found that we could more easily make an access hole with a threaded fitting for the Siemens style, because it fits through a smaller port:

The paddle is larger, but it can be inserted and turned 90° when installing it.

Other than access, they seem to work the same.

The rotating vane point detector works well, although I have had several instances where the internal mechanism works loose in a vibrating environmen, but this may be only manufacturer specific. I have had good service from vibrating point level probes (tuning fork type). Another good instrument is an ultrasonic level probe but gives a modulating electrical signal out and not a switch contact out.

I use The standard Bindicators for plastic granules. My backup or safety swtch for overfull is a laser and target. If I ever reinstrument this system it will be all laser/target. The laser target is a SS pipe with half of it cut away on the longitude leaving a 6" long gap for the laser to bridge. When the material blocks the laser it will, at my selection, make/break a contact. The diode laser system has never missed and it is cheap.

Thanks for reply.

Can you give a link to your preferred manufacturer?

Hi. We've used several brands of bin level indicators in the past for both plastic granules and resins and have had the best success with a brand called UWT Level Controls. It seems to be the most reliable in terms of motor reliability and flexibility in process connections as well as materials. It has rotary paddle switches, vibrating fork switches and continuous units as well like ultrasonic and plumb bob. The website is www.uwtlevel.com. The Siemens units are actually UWT.
