Sorry, Gobani1966

But I have to disagree. The question was," can I use".

Not should I use, or "is it common practice to use"or, "would you use?"

You definitely can use SS rod to weld mild steel. Just as you can use mild steel rod to weld SS. But, this is probably contrary to AWS practice.

I'm not saying it's good/common practice, but you can do it.

The question is, "can I use?". The answer is, yes. At no time did I suggest that he (or she) use SS rod to weld mild steel.

I just answered the question as stated in the original post.

Your response is wrong! Your reasoning is wrong. You are wrong. Go back and read the original post. No conditions were given. No environmental conditions are given. No strength requirements are given. No specification is cited. No specific materials are discussed. The question is obviously not from an experienced welder.

Cheers.

Thanks.
