what are AC insulation levels and DC insulation levels?

The amount of voltage an insulator will take before there is risk of it becoming a conductor.

What I remember from HVDC transmission line.

"A transmission line has to be insulated for over voltges expected during faults, switching operation. To meet such requirement the AC line need levels of insulation corresponding to an AC voltage of 2.5 to 3 times the normal rated voltage."

Same for DC but I am not going in detail.

Insulation level denotes the level of capability of particular equipment that withstands the current as it exceeds its threshold value. Each and every equipment is designed for particular level of insulation with specified time. DC insulation level is dealt with DC(Direct/Constant) currents and AC deals with Alternating/sinusoidal currents.
