Hipot Testing on Cables

07/25/2010 10:19 PM

There seems to be no commonly acceptable standard/or practice on the test voltage and the duration for the hipot tests on the HV cables.

For example, for a 33KV cable commissioning test after laying,DC voltage of 67KV dc (twice the system voltage + 1 kv) for 15 mts.is in vogue in INDIA.

Engineers now opine that this is not safe for the cable,1 mt. or 5 mts duration is ideal.

Better still is to test the cable with a VLF (very low frequency such as 0.1 H etc) at a

much lower volt and shorter duration than DC hipot test.

Specialists' recommendation with proof of authority when in dispute will be very helpful

to the community.

there was a discussion earlier this year on this subject and I can't find it, however, there are white papers that say consistent high voltage testing of cable does more harm than good and causes micro-cracks in the insulation.. again I wish I could find that paper

I've included a few links that might be helpful

This pdf is VERY enlightening
