Digital Broadcast Multiplexing for DTT

03/01/2007 3:52 AM
  • Tanzania is in a process of migrating from analog broadcasting to digital
  • what are the formats or types of digital broadcast multiplexing for DTTavailable?
  • what are the problems experienced and solutions ?
  • is there a limit for number of streams to be multiplexed?

Friend

You have asked a much bigger question than you may be aware. A couple of points to start with--assuming you are talking about terrestrial AM or FM broadcasting.

You will need to know the spectrum allocations that exist in your country. Here's why. The Eureka system which is widely used in Europe and somewhat in Canada requires spectrum in the L band. It is an appropriate technology in Europe but not for the United States for various reasons, one of which is spectrum availability.

I'm wondering how many of your listeners have receivers capable of receiving digital formats. Are you state sponsored or independent? Are you going to just turn off analog one day and turn on digital the next morning? Are you going to be in-band and on-channel or do you plan on using some other chunk of spectrum? Will you do some simulcasting thing while your listenership transitions to the new receivers? From watching the struggle to go digital here in the Americas I am inclined to think the problems or more political and market oriented than purely technical. Once the human side of the equation is sorted out, then you begin to engineer a system that will meet your particular needs.

Designing the technical facility is too much to go into here and you have not provided any of the necessary information to be able to speak intelligently about this project. You can get all the information you need on-line by contacting any of the major transmitter builders like (in the USA) Harris Corporation, Broadcast Electronics Inc., Nautel, et. al.

You can learn more by researching "Eureka" and "IBOC", otherwise known as HD Radio. Wikipedia is probably a good place to start.

I have not attempted to discuss your questions concerning multiplexing or the number of discrete streams because 1.) I don't know enough, and 2.) there are a lot of other design criteria decisions to be made before you start trying to answer these questions.

Good luck

Thanks Dear for your advise. I have two issues here.Visit my profile, you will find that i am pursuing my Postgraduate studies. These are the inputs to my project with title "Study on Digital Video Multiplexing for DTT".Secondly,as i have said Tanzania is in its initial stages for migrating to digital broadcasting. It is a MUST as far as the Tanzania Broadcasting Regulatory Authorities have announced(complete migration by 2015). Now you can have a picture that i want to acquire that knowledge for the purpose of my training and at the same time to be an expert for the Multiplex operator as he will be responsible for running multiplexing of Video processes. In short i want to learn Video Multiplexing Process for DTT.I have noted important points from your text and i will work on them. Thank you , Mkotsollah.

I was thinking more particularly of radio which is my field of expertise (if there is indeed anything I am expert at) rather than Television. Our TV has gone digital High Definition because the government has mandated it. Sounds like you are in somewhat the same situation. I believe you need input from the TV broadcasters more than myself. Again, so far as technical issues, Harris Corporation is the best source I know since they build television transmitters also. Best wishes as you proceed to educate yourself and become an asset and resource for Tanzania's progress.

Thank you Lonnie for your input .

I will follow your advise hopping that TV Broadcasters will also be at a position to digest the topic.

Best wishes,
