Anti-Condensation/ Space Heaters For HV Motors

07/27/2010 8:47 AM

Why do we need to use anti-condensation/ space heaters for HV motors when it is not in operation/ running condition even it isn't installed in the low temperature ambient? Thanks in advance.

Wound equipment (including large motors) have significant thermal mass. As the ambient temperature changes, the winding's temp can't follow the air exactly, so the temp differential can cause condensation of moisture from the air. Also, some insulating materials have a tendency to absorb moisture from the air. Once absorbed into the insulation, it is much more difficult to get the moisture out. Not only does it provide a possible means of electrical breakdown when the device is energized, it also can deteriorate the insulation physically.

The anti-condensation heaters keep the insulation temp higher than the fluctuations in ambient, so that condensation cannot take place, and absorbed moisture tends to be driven out.

Dear Sir,

I had the oppurtunity to be with my friend who is a leading re-winder

of HT motors ( 3.3 to 6.6 Kv) for Singareni Coal mines of AP. The windings are

resin moulded to avoid moisture in the windings. The ends are brazed to form the

winding groups ( phase connections) and this is a place where one can expect

moisture to be a problem especially at coal mines which is always damp.

To safe guard against this there are space haeters ( connected to an

external low voltage 220 V AC ). The space heaters come on power automatically.
