No Neutral Switchgear Control Power

07/29/2010 3:15 PM

We just installed power to switchgear using existing feeders we thought had a neutral but we don't... Some of the control power transformers and meters have a spot for the neutral to land to and I assume reference it as well. I look through the shop drawings and noticed we are taking control power from the incoming phase conductors at 480V single phase then go through the xfmr to get our 120v. That 120v then routes through the undervoltage relay then I assume to the circuit breaker itself. The control power transformers receive control power off both phase a and phase b then hit a 480/277v – 120V xfmr. Now since we don't have a neutral and the xfmr is rated as if we have a neutral I am a little confused here. Could I provide a 120V power source and bypass the little transformers, also my 120V power will be off of batteries and will never lose voltage even while an outage occurs – how will this affect my existing scheme and undervotlage relays that will never engage?

If the equipment is installed using metallic conduit i.e. EMT, IMC, RGS and approved conduit fittings, attach a pig tail to one of the of the secondary (120V) conductors and ground that to the control transformer base (which I assume is rigidly mounted inside of the enclosure).

This is legal per NEC under two headings, separately derived power source and equipment ground.

This will work but in any case check with your local AHJ (authority having jurisdiction).

You may use the 120v control power from batteries( UPS, I assume ) for your breaker control power supply. However Under voltage sensing needs to be retained with your original system.

It is very difficult for us to imagine the total picture of your installation and from the above explanations it is not easy to figure it out. But if you can give us some sketch drawing of your installation may be we can assist you on your problem. We may afraid to give you the wrong direction and it is dangerous especially in electricity.
