External Short Circuit Level for Generator Rating

07/30/2010 8:50 AM

Does generator manufacturer require external short circuit current to rate his equipment?

My understading was other way round, ie. generator manufacturer shall provide short circuit current (or sub transient reactances) from his equipment to the system.

Only point I could think of external SCC might important to generator manufacturer will be at a winding short circuit. Do they really consider external SCC for windings and bracings rating?

Your understanding is correct. The external short circuit current doesn't affect the generator design. The Generator is designed to withstand the short circuit current of its own.

However, the breaking current of the generator circuit breaker shall be rated for the short circuit current that may flow through it when the short circuit occurs at generator terminal.
