DG set selection

07/31/2010 9:36 AM

Dear sir;

We have a construction going on. It is a hostel with 16 rooms. Every room will have 1 tubelight and a fan. Apart from this we will have around 20 lights around the building for public utility space. The hostel has a solar assisted electric water heater + one borewell to lift water for 5 floors. Could you please recommend the correct DG that we need to buy. Jsut behind the hostel we have residential area. Thanks in advance.

Rgds,

Prashant

As you mention a motor load (pump) I would suggest contacting the manufacturers of gen sets with your load data and sound emission concerns. The motor starting capabilities and other characteristics of generators vary widely between manufactures.

Why not you intellectual giants give some tips to reach a solution for the problem asked by someone. Some fresh engineers just need a support to execute. Else please dont take that risk to answer.

Please accept my apology, I was trying to point out that motor loads (in this case, an unknown) require that the generator be able to supply the additional inrush current required for starting these motors. Some generators of a given output rating are capable of this, others are not. The generator manufacturers can provide information regarding this. This was a "Tip" to reach a solution.

Load calculations are:

1- 16 rooms with one twin tube light fittings of 40 watt each.

2- 16 ceiling fans of 100 watt each.

3- 20 lights of 100 watt each for the general area.

4- water heater 5000 watt.

5- Pump motor 10 kw.

16x2x40 = 1280 watt

16x100 = 1600 watt

20x100 = 2000 watt

water heater= 5000 watt

pump motor = 10, 000 watt

total load = 19,880 watts.

125% of 19880 watts = 24,850 watts

Add 25% for future extension.3106 watt

A genset of 30 kw shall be enoug. you can adjust the loads on the real values.

if your tube lights are using megnatic ballasts then multiply the wattage of the tube with 1.8 to calculate its load.

you can adjust the load of the pump on real basis and reduce the solar assisted water heate load and apply the selection method given above.

you can enquire from the market and now a days you can get acoustic generator set very easily with a sound level nearly equal to a car engine.

You should consider the diversity factor,otherwise you will recommend over-sized genset which is not economical.

1- What diversity factor would you consider in a boys hostel, where quantity of every equipment is just one .

2- Mind it that it is a boys hostel, so who cares policy will prevail, everything shall be working even when they are out for class etc etc.

3- the guy did not mention small power points (sockets) + the service areas like kitchen etc, so these were also taken into account.

4- If the supply is 100% dependent on generator, I will suggest two, one working one standby.

The best way to do things is to follow some recognised document like the I.E.E Wiring regulations(BS7671)
