Solar Tsunami to Strike Earth Tonight

08/03/2010 12:48 PM

The Sun's surface erupted early Sunday morning, blasting tons of plasma into interplanetary space -- directly towards the Earth.

That wall of ionized atoms should hit the planet tonight, say scientists, creating a geomagnetic storm and a spectacular light show and possibly threatening satellites in orbit.

Does the "Sun" not do this all the time to varying degree's and so what if a few satellites fail.

Surely more of a worry is the weather pattern disturbance in an already very uncertain pattern.

I am sure solar flares are are calculated into the equation and maybe some damage will occur but I am fairly sure there is not too much to worry about.

Still here and everything is still functional so I guess it was a non-event. Kind of like 2012!

a number of points that might be worth considering:

1. This was reported on Fox News so that removes any credibility that the story might otherwise have.

2. see 1 above.

3. So what? Shall we start making hats out of tinfoil to protect ourselves?

Does anyone actually believe that this is the first time that this has happenned?

It's not Bush's fault that Fox News is crap or that we experienced a Solar Tsunami ? Are you sure? .

Gods knows he got blamed for everything else so why not blame these two on him aswell .

Had I known about this earlier, I could have developed and sold a huge quantity of plasma resistant clothing and made a fortune.

In a culture more and more reliant on sensitive electronics to coordinate our lives, it seems we more vulnerable to solar events. With the production of things like Ipads to GPS tracking devices for food and goods deliveries is there any engineering approach to make electronics less sensitive to solar events (and still have them reasonable in size and cost) besides the genius's who keep mentioning foil hats? Of course, if a massive CME occured, the grid would go down and all those little techie items would be moot... foil hat or no.

Living in an area with a moderate earthquake risk, I think I will be more concerned about quakes.

Matter of fact on a scale of 1 to 1000 solar storms are about 1001 for me.
