Advanced Free Verison of Linux

08/04/2010 5:49 AM

I want to download advanced freeversion of Linux. Just tell me whether various messengers can run on them or not.

From where I should download it? And how should I make it my choice of operating system while booting?

Agreed, and now there are several versions of Ubuntu, i prefer Kubuntu as easiest.

the best plan is to find compatible hardware for linux, otherwise its difficult

If you must have a multiple boot system with Windows as one of the OSs, create a suitably sized primary partition for Windows and install it first. Then download and burn a live-cd of some Linux distribution like

http://www.ubuntu.com/

Proceed to install Linux and it will usually detect the alternate OS and provide options for creating new Linux partitions and the installation of a multiple OS boot manager. The online documentation provided covers almost all possible cases and the Linux discussion/help forums cover anything left out.

I now have only Ubuntu (with Firefox,OpenOffice, etc.) on all my computers except one, which dual boots WinXP or Ubuntu. I only turn on that PC three or four times a year when I'm forced to retrieve some old Windows data. Good Luck!

The only thing i have to add to the above is that Pidgin works just like MS Messenger, and comes with Ubuntu (and, most likely, other versions of Linux as well). You can use your existing Messenger accounts in Pidgen...There are likely other messenger applications available as well- this is the one I know. Once you get your system up and running, you may want to experiment with some of the other options, and you may find something you like better.

Also, don't forget to mention getting or downloading a "Live" version of Linux that will boot directly from your CD/DVD drive, as long as your BIOS setting is correct; i.e., Boot sequence set for CD drive before HD. It's a way of trying Linux before actually installing. Also, some of the latest versions of Linux can be installed from within Windows which I don't think requires dual booting.

"Some of the latest versions of Linux can be installed from within Windows..."

I know the reverse is true, as well- I use both Wine and VirtualBox to run Windows applications on my Linux box. Although, I find it less and less necessary to drop down into Windows for applications for which there are no equivalents in Linux...
