Telecommunications Issue

08/06/2010 10:13 AM

I use Att for both internet and phone. Here's the problem: On incoming phone calls the call is full of static for 4-5 seconds, then clears up.

More info:

I can hear the person calling in, but they can barely hear me.

This only happens on incoming calls, never outgoing.

It is intermittent, sometimes it's every call, sometimes a couple of times a day.

Computer connection is good, never any problem uploading or downloading.

All connections inside the house are good.

I do use cordless phones, but this condition did not exist before going with Att.

After the 4-5 seconds of static, all is clear and normal.

Field techs have been out and were not able to determine cause. All outside lines tested good.

Any ideas, this is very annoying. Thanks

Greetings kramarat,

This may be a shot in the dark but have you tried disconnecting the cordless phone you are currently using and plugging in a corded phone?

Another thought is if it is an intermittent problem on the AT&T side, maybe this is why they are not detecting it.

Hope you get to the bottom of this!

I'll try using the corded phone for a while and see if it does the same thing. I wonder if it could be the line filter that my base unit is plugged into, it seems like that would either be good or bad though.

Unfortunately, my only choices are ATT or the cable company and I've heard similar complaints about both. They are not too concerned about it, basically, oh well.

I suspect there is a faulty component in their switching gear out by the road or somewhere. My chances of getting it to act up when the techs are here is pretty slim.

I'll replace filter and try corded phone and update thread if I can make a determination. Thanks

Your mention of the "gear out by the road" is what happened to me when I first got AT&T. Several calls and finally one to the actual garage for the service center (phone number mistakenly given to me by some new guy) The service tech admitted that the device/card (It separates the voice from the DSL signal) that served my line, was an old obsolete one. It took two days for them to open the cabinet on the next street and replace this board with an upgraded one.

The symptoms were as you described.

I guess the key here, is to get the number that connects you to the people that actually do the work.

This is what I suspect. I used to have Clearwire, worked well until they went to 4G, they reconfigured the antennas, and left me SOL in a dead zone.

This will be a fun search. Now that stockholders have supplanted customers in importance across the board in a lot of these industries the end product will continue to get crappier, as well as anything that resembled customer service.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Unredundant,

Thanks for the advice. I finally got through to a person at AT&T, (that would listen), I explained to her what you had told me. She didn't seem surprised. Apparently the squeeky wheel gets the oil.

Anyway, she told me that someone would be out in a day or two. We'll see.

I'll post to let everyone know.

It may be time for a new phone. I'd do as KJK/USA suggested and try the old phone, if you have one.

I Googled static on cordless phones but don't know that there's any help there.

Good luck.

I had a very similar problem a couple of years ago. I could hear static for a few seconds when answering the phone and occasionally would hear it during the conversation. DSL was fine and never dropped. Phone guy was clueless and useless.

Chased it down to a damaged DSL filter out in the barn that had been hit. Filter didn't even have anything plugged into it.

Never a problem since.

Interesting, thanks for the reply. That's strange.

Your problem could be with one of their Inter-office carrier systems. Does it only occur when you call certain areas (Cities). The inter-office carriers have a 4-wire interface and can be bad on your tramsmit side to the person you called. If you can log the phone number you are calling when the trouble occurs this will help them in finding the defective carrier.

Hi redman, No, it's only on incoming calls and doesn't seem to matter from where the call originated.
