Well, your question asks for general information, and some pretty mission specific information.

This link to Wikipedia gives a general overview of Thermogravimetric Analysis, the process you are asking about.

For the specific procedure, consult the equipment manufacturer. You may need to capture the offgass, and process with an Infrared Spectroscope.

Thermogravimetric analysis is contraindicated.

Wouldn't you have to have a sample of the acid original placed in the battery for such a test to be conclusive.

I have an update on this thread.

New member raju raj1632@yahoo.com sent me an internal massage reading:

"I want to know how to determine lead sulphate from active mass in lead acid battery by thermogravimatric analyzer (TGA)? Here , acid= sulphuric acid"

As indicated by lynlynch in #2, TGA is contraindicated (probably not the best way to do it) here. H2SO4 is sometimes used as a dehydrating agent in TGA. The nonvolatile nature of it, with lead sulphate in solution, will not respond well to TGA.

Here is a paper of TGA results demonstrating this.

Now, full disclosure. There are many CR4 members who can discuss this more completely than I. They may have given me enough rope to hang myself, just to see what kind of a dumb answer I can come up with. With some luck, someone will come along and explain more clearly than I have.
