Nanotechnology

03/03/2007 1:23 PM

I decided to start this thread to discuss the many applications that nanotechnology has in most areas of engineering and science. We hear about many new products and possible applications of the technology but when will we see the end result? When are these new products expected go on the market?

Among the impressive products I see batteries. There is a company called Altairnano that has batteries that charge in a few minutes only and have a long life.

and

And you should not forget A123 :

And please Check out

The report also includes supercapacitors

There are also things going with the use of nanomolecules for surface treatment. This would enable the surfaces to stay clean as nothing sticks to it.

Could these batteries be used to power one of the new $100 laptops?

I am an undergrad studying chemical engineering. Some seminars I attend are more or less nano based. i see a lot of research in biochemistry such as drug delivery systems. one interesting topic is on how to make drug particles smaller to have better target distribution in a patient.

current techniques set a minimum particle size of 1 micron. this has a huge effect on how the drug can be administered. but with breakthrough technology such as using supercritical co2 and solid co-solvents or supercritical antisolvent processes in conjunction with advanced mass transfer technology, drug particles can be tuned down to a given size based on vibrational intensities. the scale range therefore can reach as low as 500nm.

if you're interested in more details, google Rapid Expansion Supercritical Solutions (RESS) or SAS (Supercritical Anti-solvent) Processes.

a good journal can be found here

Great subject Paul4,

ChemE119, ..apparently most detergents claiming to be nanotech based, isn't actually so, and could you produce nanodetergent using RESS( report you linked talked obout drug)

rmg21,

i am not familir with nanodetergents, however it is my understanding that RESS is used for compounds that are soluble in supercritical CO2. This property is key to allow the solution to be passed through a nozzle, which allows the expansion of the solution and evaporates the CO2, thus leaving behind small product particles.
