Blower Motor in AC Won't Restart

08/14/2010 12:29 PM

I recently replaced the blower motor in my AC, also put a new capacitor in.

it has been about 3 weeks

the system iced up restricting the air flow thus triping the breaker

thawed out system

now sometimes the motor won't start without help from me spinning blower

I can hear switches comming on and a buzz in the blower motor but sometimes the motor won't turn over without my help

once started runs fine

is the problem in the motor or capacitor ?

Puzzeled

I would recommend checking the condition of the contacts on the contactor (relay) that supplies this motor. Usually this is a definite purpose contactor and the contacts are accessible. These contactors are relatively inexpensive to replace.

I agree, contacts cost me about $30. I also replaced capacitor and was told by guy at the counter that most after market capacitors are now made in China and bad ones turn up fairly regularly. The problem sounds identical to the one I had that turned out to be contacts.

The symptom is consistent with the failure of the run or start capacitor.

We install many dozen of blowers with run capacitors every years and have noticed an increase in failure rate in the last few years. We increase the voltage rating hoping for longer life but it didn't help.

The original capacitors were made in China. Last week, we changed suppliers to Cornell Dublier that are made in Mexico. I hope for better life expectancy. Time will tell.

I dissected three Chinese manufactured caps (all read open) and found that one or both leads were not attached, or had become detached, from the foil.

Please do not be offended but, based on your reply, and in the interest of safety, any further action should be done by a professional.

If you still think you can tackle it, here is an image of a contactor:

Good point! I always assume that people that post here are fairly adept. It hadn't occurred to me that someone could hurt themselves following advice here, even if it's right. I think your post was completely appropriate and you have made me aware that some people should not necessarily be tearing into electrical components if they have not had any prior experience. I will keep this in mind in the future.

Indeed,

I think Lynlynch has the best approach to this kind of situation.

Ask questions first to detect the skill level.

Dear AMDoe, <now sometimes the motor won't start without help from me spinning blower. I can hear switches comming on and a buzz in the blower motor but sometimes the motor won't turn over without my help, once started runs fine is the problem in the motor or capacitor ?> The capacitor is the problem you are describing. As was said in the previous comment check, or change the contactor. Also note, the fact that the heat has been so severe recently, it is not to uncommon to have incoming power related concerns.... double check for loose connections, and proper air flow across the condenser. -hope this helps

Nudge. Nudge. Wink. Wink............Say no more.

Last week a student of mine bought twenty double gang power points on e-bay........verycheap............very nasty.

Half the switches didn't work, he actually wired one in.........and poof!!........the switch burnt out.

Your evap coil or filter may be clogged, causing the ice to form. Also may be low on freon.

Clean coil first, see what happens.I recommend a foaming no-rinse type of cleaner.

Need guages to check freon/head pressure/superheat,sub-cooling,etc.

You also may have fried another capacitor due to excessive starting current.

Possible causes for ice coil are- Shortage of refrigerant, Low suction pressure, Low return air temperature, Indoor blower not running, Indoor blower belt slipping, Indoor filter air filter dirty, Dirty or defective expansion device. Possible causes for indoor blower not running are: Blown fuse, defective relay, broken belt, faulty wiring or loose connections.

Shorted run cap will allow motor to run, but not up to speed. That will cause the coil to ice up. Try a new cap, or test to see if the old one is good. If the compressor runs, it is not the contactor or the compressor would not run. Besides, on most residential A/C systems to indoor fan comes from a different part of the circuit. -- JHF
