Battery Swapping Between Vehicles?

08/19/2010 9:21 AM

The other day I was in a hurry so I swapped the 12V battery from my Jeep into my daughters 2005 Mitshubishi Eclipse. The Jeep battery was a bit shorter, but fit alright. Her car started right up. I did get the correct battery for her car. Could the Jeep battery or anything in the Mitshubishi be damaged when a battery is swapped like this?

Since you didn't tell us which battery was used, we cannot provide a good answer. Now that you are not in such a hurry go out and solve this problem.

As long as they're both 12v, and you don't damage the connectors in your hurry, then no.

Oh, no!

Battery swapping like this is the leading cause of car trouble.

What ever troubles the Jeep has, the Eclipse now has. The contagions of many car problems lay silent in the battery, waiting for just the opportunity you have given them. The jump start is the usual method, but a battery swap...

On second thought, you should be fine.

Not that dreaded auto battery virus again? Windows won't open! Doors won't close! Turn the starter and it all freezes!

I see, Holzfeller, that you are familiar with the syndrome.

Starter motor failure, drips of power steering fluid, goes through U-Joints, poor mileage and performance... nobody at work ever wants a jump from me, nor even wants to park next to my car!

you might loose the memory on your radio, and also possibly some information on the engine management, but the ecu will learn the data again.

the radio code can be difficult if you dont have it written down somwhere.

other wise there is no problem apart from the capacity of the battery

If the battery mounting/retaining facilities are not compatible, the improperly secured battery could tip over causing a fire and loss of the vehicle and occupants. Is that serious enough for you?

If the resulting fire happened in the wrong place, such as in busy rush hour traffic, on an express way, other people could be injured or killed also. If the fire started or propagated to a forested area, the resulting fire could start a forest fire, burn millions of acres and cause the loss of uncounted woodland homes and their occupants.

But if nothing like that happened, the most likely result is loss of radio programming and having to reset the clock.

Have FUN!

Sounds a bit far-fetched and over-dramatic to me. Auto batteries are not that different in size (unless you're stupid enough to try fitting a 6v motorbike battery), so they will either not fit into the space, or if they do they will not tip over. Besides, the electrolyte will not flood out, and it is more corrosive than explosive.

Battery capacity could be a problem if it is too small, then you might have trouble starting, especially if it doesn't start first time, but it won't cause any damage (unless you resort to a 'Basil Fawlty' when the car doesn't start). Too much capacity is not a problem, the car only takes what it needs, again no damage.

Radio codes are a pain!

Thanks for your input. Goes to show the people at the auto parts stores don't know what they're talking about.
