Australian Building Code

We are providing a small piece of air pollution control equipment to a company located in Karratha, Australia and must supply some design calculations for seismic and wind loading. As this is a very small project it is not our desire to purchase an Australian Building Code and we can design to ASCE or IBC, but need to have an understanding of the approximate wind and seismic requirements for this area, in "English" terms. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,

What, specifically do you wish to access in the Au Building Code?

I may be able to look for it for you.

From your post, I'd surmise that if you have designed the device, what ever that is, to cope with 7.5 Richter and 120mph wind loading you have it in the bag.

Sorry, I'm old enough to to still use imperial. Can do metric, under duress tho'.

I think we are on the right path. The "device" is a small baghouse dust collector that will sit on someone else's supports. We will design per ASCE/ANSI at seismic zone 4 and 170 mph wind (customer indicated 77 m/s wind velocity). I found a UWA (U of Western Australia) website with seismic activity for the area and we feel a seismic 4 is appropriate. Our customer (not the "end user") has requested calculations but cannot supply appropriate design data or code. We will supply calculations based on what we know of the area. We may need to dig deeper if this is not satisfactory for their purposes. Thanks for your assistance. If needed, I certainly will get back with you.

Hi. We have the same problem here in NZ. I wanted to know some fresh air calcs for a building. The council would not commit to a figgure, so when it came time to test if they didnt know the levels, how could they say if it met spec ?. As the specs are normaly AU/NZ specs they should both apply to both countries. I did get an answer to my question by searching the web. when i typed this into google seismic and wind loading as/nz it gave me this page.. http://www.dbh.govt.nz/UserFiles/File/Publications/Building/Guidance-information/pdf/practice-advisory-09.pdf If you want to do your head in have a read.

Thanks. This addendum seems to be appropriate for NZ as opposed to AU, but does provide some useful information. I'll keep it cataloged. I suppose the avoidance of providing specific design information keeps the burden of proof on the supplier and allows the customer/GC/A&E to stay out of compliance discussions. Unfortunate. Hope it all worked out well for you in your case.
