The answers to your questions depends on the standards your country sets & the number of applicants- generally speaking it is seen as a soft job so many applicants- which means the highest qualified will have the inside running- all else being equal!. Suggest you contact the dept of machinery safety or equivalent in your country.

The "Boiler Inspector" is becoming a rare breed. Most of the Boiler Inspectors were retired or discharged Navy guys and received their training from the Navy. The modern ships do not use steam in the way the older ones did. Today, there are companies such as Hartfort Steam Boiler (HSB Global) that train for boiler inspection. The American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspection (NBIC) also provide training courses periodically.

There are jurisdictional requirements (usually by states) that regulate the standards for becoming a Boiler Inspector. (I capitalize the title because I hold them in high esteem.) ASME and The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspection also have a set of standards that are accepted by most states. The states that accept the standards are called "Code States". Even within these standards, states may add or take away form any external standards. Some states provide their own testing for inspectors and some use the national standards. Our state "West Virginia" provides testing and uses the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector's standards. The West Virginia Department of Labor administers the examination. It is not easy and is usually a 2 day affair.

A Boiler Inspector is a specialist and must be admired!
