Motor Not Taking Load

09/02/2010 1:52 AM

I am in a cable manufacturing plant. A armour winding m/c of 7.5 hp is present. But from some days when tension is being executed the motor is not able to run and stops while running and after an interval of 3 to 4 secs it runs again. After a couple of minutes this problem arises again.

what is the solution for this???

Can you give more information?

IE

Fixed speed or variable

Overload type

Rated FLC

Actual running current

Without the basics what have we got to build on?

check the supply voltage to be within the specified limits, check current at the time of motor loading.

By armour winding do you mean armature winding? if so, then you are working with a D.C. motor that has carbon brushes probably worn out to the point they loose contact with the commutator (open circuit), just replace them !.

Thermal overload, automatically resetting?

check your motor type

if dc, most probably carbon brush, check also for lose connection

if ac 3phase, and it sound like humming when it stop, check the motor connection maybe there is lose contact and single phasing occurs. check also the individual ryb line supplying your motor. Check also the mcb for lose contact.

Is the motor ran from a drive? Is there a feedback loop? When you say tension is that a measured variable in your control system? Is the motor a new part of your system, or something that has worked for years?

my dear i am not very familiar with armour winding but do the machine have a safety switch or tension limit switch that protect the cable (armour) to cut-off in case the supply spool wont rotate or stock up. Probably your motor is not the problem but this safety switch trip the motor supply. maybe the spool bearing need lubrication or replacement.

How is the motor coupled to the load? Via a slipping clutch or fluid coupling???

If so, suspect clutch slipping or leaked out fluid in the coupling.

Or one of thousand other reasans.

As far as I am aware, Steel tape/wire armouring m/cs come with a fluid coupling. So that should be your problem. This is with a view that when you mention "motor not working", you actually mean that the taping head is not working. I suggest first you eliminate this doubt by checking the shaft rpm before and after the fluid coupling. You may find it difficult to analyse this if the motor is with integral fluid coupling and that is why you are stating that motor is not able to run.

eliminate this first before getting to the motor.
