AVK Alternator - Aux Winding Problem

09/03/2010 7:13 AM

Dear Friends

We have 2800kVA x 3 nos AVK make Alternator working in parallel with MTU make diesel engines. We have the problem of reactive power sharing. It beome uneven from last one month. We have checked and found the aux power to the AVR is not getting properly. The reason is one of the aux winding of alternator is opened. There is total two aux windings in the alternator are giving 80V two seperate supply to AVR. The both supply are with 90 degree phase difference. Can some one advise how we can solve this problem without doing the rewinding of the aux winding which is placed below main stator windings?

Thanks in advance.

Measure the voltage and amperage needed by either of the 2 operating gensets, and on the failed set either tap the main output windings, add a transformer, or a separate power supply off of the other gensets.

Instead of a transformer, could this person add a PMG instead?

I would think it would be more cost effective to rewind the auxiliary winding, unless the PMG is offered as an option on the generator its mounting would be quite a project and take considerable time. The power for a voltage regulator with separate sensing doesn't need to be all that precise so a off the shelf power transformer would be a quick and low cost alternative, a major repair could be done at a scheduled shut down.

I was speaking more to the "possability of" as opposed to the practicality of - I was trying to better understand the question (precisely what the two alternate coils were used for in the generator). Where I am, we use the generators only for single source or backup power, and rarely have the configurations to do power sharing and phase matching.

I have often wanted to try load sharing with a few of the generators here, but I don't have any idea where to begin - and probably don't have any of the equipment necessary.

Not having a full circuit diagram of the AVR + Power sharing information, it will be very difficult to advice on how to do an alternative supply to the AVR:

You said that the 2 aux windings each of them is wired to the AVR. Having this configuration suggests to me that the aux supplies (you are mentioning) have a different or an additional role to play in detecting the alternator's status in view to adjust the voltage and do the sharing of reactive power. (just awarning that just supplying from a different source might not solve your problem... may be worse off?).
