Do Not Track List

09/05/2010 8:57 AM

Here's a link to the actual proposal (http://www.worldprivacyforum.org/pdf/ConsumerProtections_FTC_ConsensusDoc_Final_s.pdf) (Sorry! Link no longer available.)

Would it work as well as the do not call list for telephones?

Should the methods of internet targeted marketing be opt in instead of opt out?

I'm sure we've all had to sign up for spam, to use an application or site

Is it a fair trade off?

Working "as well as" do not call list for telephones? I heard that the first people who signed up for the do not call list became targets instead, when the list itself was acquired and sold to purveyors of marketing call lists!

This is a nicely written proposal, though, dated 2007: did any of it fall on hearing ears? I especially like the part about not burying the important disclosures in long written agreements where they are less likely to be found, read and understood. The opt out of marketing should be front and center if not by default, and requiring opt in.

Afaict so much of the internet spamming is plain and simple illegal. My spam filter used to handle just about everything, until I had an email exchange with a certain company. Within hours of sending them email, my mail began filling up with spam for viagra and other drugs etc. Obviously these pr!#$ sold my email address as soon as they got it. I have not had a problem with sign ups ever, but that is because I sign up very rarely! and read the agreements if I do.

Of interest on "did any of it fall on hearing ears?", may be this link provided by Sue recently http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2013150,00.html#ixzz0yf5QTmos

And if I may suggest; spam that comes from email naggers is a nice supply of "legitimate" email addresses for that "sign up" needed to see if the site has anything useful. If it does, then do it for real. If not, and spam results - it's poetic justice.

"..spam that comes from email naggers is a nice supply of "legitimate" email addresses for that "sign up".."

This would be a temptation, if not for the fact I have received spam from my own email address apparently spamming myself! . The idea of using someone else's email address is standard procedure for purveyors of viruses as well as illegal spam. Many of the addresses on spam I receive are obviously other victims of the criminal spamming network, so the poetic justice would sadly miss its mark..

I would personally like to see the prosecution for spam going back to the makers of the products - Viagra topping the list. The manufacturer ultimately profits from illegal sales, so why not bust them, and see how quickly the drug supply for those spammers dries up.

I didn't sign up for do not call for a year or so

worked like a charm

As your example points out, just because you didn't say no shouldn't mean yes, this whole thing has come around again

there is a trend towards targeted marketing.

I went & found the pdf after reading this GS Newsletter

There is this firefox add onto see who's tracking you & block if you wish.

It is well written but the business would move out of US jurisdiction, to Mumbai perhaps.
