Traffic density, charted against time of day.

Cat or squirrel density, charted against traffic density.

Can you expand on your method of vehicle detection?

In addition to Doorman's comments-

You might want to record the location, date, day of week, time of day and weather conditions.

As an example:

Location: North bound Wells Street - 50' North of 5th Avenue, Any town, Anywhere 00000

Date September 5, 2010 Weather: 75 Degrees - Clear/Sunny

7AM 8AM 9AM 10AM 11AM 12PM 1PM 2PM 3PM 4PM 5PM 6PM 7PM

Vehicles:

23 26 24 18 17 25 22 17 14 19 24 22 16

In this example you can see the trend of higher number of vehicles at 8AM (commuters going to work), another peak at 12PM (commuters going to lunch), and lastly a peak between 4PM and 6PM (commuters returning home after work).

Just a simple example for you – Good Luck!

For cars, vehicle occupancy could be a useful thing to record.

This could be tricky unless you're planning to A) watch all the vehicles yourself (very boring and wasteful of good drinking time), B) slip some of your mates a few quid to do the watching/recording (not a bad approach if you can afford it, but don't pay them up-front - they may be tempted to falsify some of the results to cover the time they were in the pub), or C) get an amazingly expensive state-of-the-art video inspection system to do the job (which can record the data while you and your mates are in the pub).

You haven't given us much to go on. Do you want to be able to collect the info using some automated data-logging technique? If so, what's your budget? What kind of data are you trying to collect? Do you need data covering 24/7? Is your project about the data collection method, or the subsequent analysis?

Please expand.

Look at this:

Manual Pneumatic Road Traffic Counter Model 6527:

That'll give you some idea.

You should also please tell us if you have actually given this project any thought at all, yourself.

An automatic toll... this is an entirely different project.

A prototype? Have you been commissioned to produce such a technology? How do we get our cut?

As an officer of LynDoor® Industries, I wish to engage in discussion regarding the manufacture, distribution, and installation of these devices, as well as funds collected from the toll generated from this technology.

I hopes that one of you would drop a clue as to what the hell a "btech" was. You didn't. I searched. The correct form is, "B.Tech.".

How the hell are we going to communicate if every one goes free form?

p.s. Did you to any prep work yourself, or is it all down to us?

Tsk, Tsk.

Does it really matter what a btech is. I like that term better than "fresher". Both meaningless to me.

This is homework. The OP hasn't done any work on his own, or he might have a clue himself.

I've given him some basics, at least.

And, you could always just ask.

I'm old and grumpy, It's my prerogative to complain.

Really, I bother about whether something like that, something that I don't understand, changes the context to something other than the obvious. I don't mind if I knowingly risk making a fool of myself, but to do so unwittingly just pisses me off.

Edit. Oops, forgot to note that this is off the subject.

You bother too much about context, especially since the OP is obviously too lazy to do their own work and simply wants a free assignment laid out for them.

Oh, and don't worry about making a fool of yourself. That happens to most of us, sometime. Some here have even turned it into an art form and taken it to new heights.

Average length of vehicle (based on how long your sensor is occluded), spacing between (based on how long the sensor is clear), is there a relationship between length (and presumably mass) and spacing?

Anything else you can massage out of the data without extra hardware.

From the mass of information presented by the OP - we have no idea whether there is a sensor, let alone what type.

for free form suggestions: sound level, air turbulence, closeness to other vehicles, location in lane(within lane marks or not), presence of pollutants, speed, wheel balance, other vibratory inputs, magnetic fields and/or permiability, cell phone use in vehicle, other electromagnetic signals, length of vehicle, and so forth

All good answers, but has Elvis left the building?

Hey - How many Elvises can be seen driving, and at what time of the day?

The most important thing is which sensor you use to detect.

Circa '96 I worked with a co. that was developing a traffic surveillance system for JPL using laser scanning. It worked nicely and with created software determined class (passenger car/truck), snap a pic of vehicle, flow density, speed tracking of individual and overall, other such as snarl detection w/alarms; only limited by one's imagination.

But you are not talking about a $20 sensor with such a concept.

I have used LynDoor® Industries products for years. They're tough as nails and always give you the right count and other data.

I have one of the camo models. You never even see it. I lost one for three days once when I forgot exactly where I deployed it.

Guess I'd had a few too many nips that day.

This is the plain truth!
