GGL vs. GGA in Terms of Fix Validity? (GPS)

09/08/2010 12:53 AM

I am interested in Lat/Long position data (and time) and both GGA and GLL messages provide this (NMEA messages in GPS, that is).

My question is, which one to use?

In terms of additional information about validity of the fix, both are different information:

GGA - has Position Fix Indicator, Satellites Used, and HDOP

GLL - has Status

Is it enough to look at the GLL Status and see if it is valid or invalid? Or is it more proper to look at the extended parameters available in GGA? (is Position Fix Indicator in GGA the same as Status in GLL?)

Thanks

The NMEA designer must decide which of the many available data fields shall be used in each sentence. Some are required, some optional, and some are proprietary.

No two are alike (in your case, GLL and GGA). All data I/O from is in ASCII format. There can only be one "talker" (but many listeners) on a NMEA serial bus.

The NMEA standards are not free. You must purchase them.

Hello Znago.

I suspect help with your homework will pretty much dry up around here.

@Doorman - if you are referring to my sarcastic reply to the totally irrelevant post then, well, sorry guys, I say thank you very very much when I am given help and try to give it when I can, but I expect at least some amount of relevancy and seriousness from those who post a reply (and in that case it was way, way off mark).

PS - It's not homework

Producers of NMEA data (e.g. hardware manufacturers) are expected to purchase the spec but not consumers. Did you purchase a copy of the ASCII standard?

This provides an overview of why so many different message flavors
