Electrical Power Frequency

09/11/2010 7:30 AM

why only 50 or 60 hz frequency is used in electrical utility?y not 25 or 1oo hz. Why we use only 230 V or 120 V only? y not 300 or 90 Volts?

Standardisation.

Look in to the history of the electric supply industry and see what chaos there used to be.

There still is in some cases, I worked in mines and quarries, 550V & 440V AC and 220V & 440V DC side by side.

I spent a short time in a UK factory that used a lot of 380V machines from Belgium. There were transformers at the side of each machine. But just to add to the fun each machine had a 440V vacuum plant at the side of it!

50HZ 240V UK STANDARD,60HZ 110V US STANDARD

240/10000(human resistance)=24mA LESS HUMAN SHOCK FOR 200 MICRO SECOND

110/10000(human resistance)=11mA LESS HUMAN SHOCK FOR 500 MICRO SECOND

240V more insulation for electrical devices,110V less insulation is required

60HZ IS LESS BULKY THAN 50HZ

I PREFER US STANDARD BUT ALL WE GOT IS WHAT WE HAVE AND WE DON'T WANT TO CHANGE IT.

MORE CURRENT IS REQUIRED TO GET REQUIRED POWER FOR 110V,60HZ.

This is an interesting read, it relates the history of electric power to one town. http://www.emeb.org.uk/index.htm Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, UK.

It is written by an electrical engineer and describes trying to reconcile supplies for the town where there were many local collieries generating there own power and supplying local homes along with the local corporation running it's own power station putting out both AC & DC. Some streets had two different voltages and frequencies. (Mrs. Jones borrows Mrs. Smith's electric iron and burns the house down).
