Strange - Optical Illusion

09/13/2010 7:31 AM

This is wild. I thought I'd share it here. It just goes to show, our brains don't always perceive things as they really are.

I think so, if you can still edit, make it bigger and it will work better.

My daughter (when younger) wouldn't believe it was a "still" until I printed it out and showed her that it even "moved" on paper.

BTW - reckon your's is a better emetic.

The one i just couldn't accept was from Adelson of MIT....took me a while to prove it myself, despite its pedigree....

Our brains don't perceive things as they really are.

This is one of those fun statements that comes up when studying philosophy (especially when being introduced to Kant).

Think about it. To say our brains don't perceive things as they really are means:

  1. We know how things really are.
  2. Our perception does not match what we know.

But how can we assert #1 if #2 is true? The only way we can say that our brains are unaware of how things really are is if we know (i.e. our brains are aware of) how things really are. Only then can we make the comparison. If we know enough to make the comparison, then our brains have perceived enough of how things really are for us to also know how things really are not. It's a fun little contradiction.
